Challenge

Bomb Productions faced a high-stakes challenge in bringing Season 2 to life. The production required over 1200 VFX shots across 12 episodes, all within tight delivery windows. With only 26 weeks to complete critical sequences such as large-scale battles, intricate set extensions, and complex clean-up work, the stakes were immense. Failure to deliver on time would have meant delays to the broadcast schedule, escalating costs, and, most damaging of all, the risk of disappointing audiences eagerly awaiting the follow-up to a highly successful Season 1. One of the toughest technical hurdles came in the form of a keying challenge, where delicate elements such as hair and feathers had to be extracted from busy and out-of-focus background, only to be re-integrated seamlessly onto a new environment. This required not just technical precision but also a workflow capable of producing invisible results at scale.

Our Solution

AlphaVFX stepped in as the main VFX vendor, taking responsibility for entire sequences of invisible compositing and 3D work. To meet the demands of the schedule, the team developed custom workflows and tools in Nuke and Blender, ensuring both speed and quality. By building templates and repeatable processes, we reduced the need for multiple revision cycles and enabled the client team to review polished work earlier in the process. This approach provided Bomb Productions with rapid turnaround on complex episodes without compromising the artistic integrity of the series. Most importantly, it gave the production team the confidence that their broadcast deadlines would be met without sacrificing quality.

Delivery & Results

Over the course of the production, AlphaVFX delivered more than 1,200 shots across 12 episodes. The project was completed in just 26 weeks, with an average of fewer than one revision cycle per shot (well below industry norms). The result was a season that aired on schedule and maintained the seamless visual storytelling that had become a hallmark of the series.

Transformation

Before this partnership, Bomb Productions often had to manage multiple VFX vendors with uneven turnaround times and costly revision cycles. By working with AlphaVFX as their primary vendor, they gained a partner who could deliver predictable quality, speed, and invisible results across the entire season. The experience has transformed how the production team approaches VFX on high-demand projects. Looking ahead, Bomb Productions now sees AlphaVFX as a trusted collaborator for historically demanding series and other large-scale productions.

Technical Highlights

AlphaVFX handled full sequences involving compositing, environment extensions, crowd simulations, digital clean-ups, blood and gore effects, 3D asset creation and integration, and advanced keying work. Among the standout sequences were expansive battlefield extensions populated with thousands of warriors, camera tracking and set extensions that transformed rural filming locations into historically accurate kingdoms, and delicate keying shots involving fine details such as hair and feathers. On the technical side, the team developed a custom keying workflow with Nuke-based tools that delivered production-ready, invisible results while cutting review cycles by 90%. This innovation allowed the production to maintain both speed and fidelity without sacrificing creative standards.
